Mahashankh Vati: Ingredients, Uses & Sahi Sevan Vidhi (Ayurvedic Guide)

Gas, acidity, badhazmi (indigestion), ya pet ki bharapan – aaj kal yeh problems har doosre ghar mein common hain. A classical Ayurvedic formulation that the Vedas have used for centuries for such digestive complaints is Mahashankh Vati. In this blog, we explain the Mahasankh vati ingredients and uses and sahi sevan vidhi ko classical Ayurvedic grantho ke reference se samjhenge.
What is Mahashankh Vati
Mahashankh Vati is a herbo-mineral polyherbal formulation mentioned in Ayurvedic classical texts under Udar Shoolroga adhikara (abdominal pain disorders). The primary ingredient is Shankh Bhasm — processed conch shell ash — hence the name “Mahashankh”. This formulation is mainly formulated to balance the Pitta and Vata doshas, which are considered as the root cause of gas, acidity and stomach ache.
Ingredients of Mahashankh Vati
In the classical formulation, the ingredients are mentioned below, but as my clinical experience shows, it varies from pharmacy to pharmacy.
| Key Ingredients | Action |
|---|---|
| Shankha Bhasma (processed conch shell) | Antacid, Pitta-shamak |
| Trikatu (Sunthi, Maricha, Pippali) | Agni Deepan (digestive stimulant) |
| Panchalavana (Saindhav, Sauvarchal, Samudra, Audbhida and Vida) | Digestive and carminative action |
| Yavakshara-Alkaline salt | Gas and bloating |
| Hingu (Asafoetida) | Vata-anulomana, gas relief |
| Ajwain/Yavani | Pachana (digestive) |
Uses of Mahashankh Vati
Mahashankh Vati is used in classical as well as in clinical practice in conditions:
- Amlapitta (hyperacidity) — acid reflux aur जलन (burning sensation)
- Adhmana (Bloating/Flatulence)—in gas and bloating
- Ajirna (Indigestion)—not properly digested
- Udar Shoola (Abdominal pain)—Pain besides gas or indigestion
- Gulma (chronic abdominal lump/distension type conditions)
Besides these indications, I also use mahasankh vati in my clinical practice, like in IBS, ulcerative colitis and constipation.
It is also used for general digestive discomfort in case of vata-pitta imbalance. Look at it from a modern angle, and you will find that its ingredients contain antacid (Shankha Bhasma), carminative (Ajwain, Hingu) and mild digestive-stimulant (Trikatu) properties all rolled into one. That’s why this formulation addresses multiple aspects of digestive issues at the same time.
Mahashankh Vati Dose (Sevan Vidhi)
I prescribe mahasankh vati, as I mention below
- Matra (Dosage): Usually 1-2 tablets, twice daily
- Samay (Time): Khaane ke baad
- Anupan (Vehicle): With slightly warm water; in some cases, takra (chaas) or ginger juice is also given
Keep with light and warm food; avoid cold, heavy, frozen food. This is a general classical recommendation; the exact dose and duration will depend upon the individual’s constitution, dosha imbalance and severity of the condition. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a qualified Ayurveda practitioner instead of self-medication.
Precautions
Pregnancy, lactation or any chronic condition mein bina consultation ke start mat karein. See a doctor immediately if symptoms do not improve in 1-2 weeks or if there is severe pain. Consult with an Ayurvedic doctor.
Conclusion
Mahashankh Vati Ayurveda ki ek time-tested classical formulation hai jo gas, acidity, stomach ache aur indigestion jaise common digestive problems mein effective maani jaati hai. But like any herbal-mineral formulation, its benefits can be optimally derived only when taken in the right dosage, with the correct anupan and under the guidance of a qualified vaidya.
